What is Civitan?
Civitan is an international community service organization which was founded in 1917 by a group of business men in Birmingham, Alabama. They began meeting to discuss ways to improve their community. Civitan International was established three years later.
The name Civitan is a latin word meaning citizenship. The motto for Civitan is "Builders of Good Citizenship". Since the 1930's, Civitan International's major focus has been toward helping people with mental disabilities. Civitan International supports the Civitan International Research Center, located on the UAB in Birmingham. This research center has already located the gene that is directly linked to mental disabilities and is currently seeking methods to correct this defect.
In 1974, Civitan became the first previously all-male service organization to welcome women as equal members.
North Lee Civitan
The North Lee Civitan Club was formed in early 2008 and chartered as a new club on July 10, 2008. As a club and as members of this elite group, we boast of being "Builders of Good Citizenship" and we make every effort to try to assist our community anytime we can.
North Lee Civitan Club assists with projects such as the annual fundraiser for the NE MS Down Syndrome Society's and the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, Survival, Inc and other organizations in the area. North Lee Civitans team up with the Jr. Civitans to assist the needy at Thanksgiving. We work to assist with the Chad Payne Wheelchair Racing teams giving young handicap children an opportunity to be a part in so many of the area marathons and relays.
North Lee Civitan Club is a proud sponsor of the newly formed West Itawamba Civitan Club and we are the host to two area Jr. Civitan clubs including the Guntown Jr. Civitans and the Saltillo High School Jr. Civitans. During our first year as a new club, we won an International award for "Outstanding Service to People With Disabilities" which was won because of our work with the NE MS Down Syndrome Society's annual fundraiser.
North Lee Civitans meet on the second and the fourth Thursdays of each month. We meet at Bren's Diner which is located on Mobile Street in downtown Saltillo, MS. We welcome anyone who is interested in becoming a part of our club. North Lee Civitans meet at 6PM for dinner and fellowship and the meetings begin at 6:30PM. Join us and become a part of North Lee Civitans. It is a blessing to be able to assist with the projects that are so dear to us.
You'll be glad you did.
